2016 EXHIBITORS GUIDE
SPECIAL NOTICE
To: • 4-H Leaders • FFA Advisors • Independent Exhibitors
• Open Class Exhibitors
Please help us to properly inform our exhibitors, especially the youth and
their families, concerning certain information specific to the 2016 Fair.
**1. All entries are due on or before the Friday, June 17 at 5 p.m.
After that you may enter the following Monday, June 20 and
Tuesday, June 21, for an additional $50.00 and Wednesday,
June 22 and Thursday, June 23 for an additional $75.00 and
Friday, June 24by 4p.m. for anadditional $100.00.After Friday,
June 24 no entries will be accepted for any reason.
Should an
error be found in an entry after the deadline, contact the Fair Office
for the "Entry Error Policy"
2. All Premium Checks will be mailed by September 1.
Note: They
must be cashed within 90 days.
(Uncashed checks are not
automatically donated back to the Fair. By law, the Fair Office must
locate any uncashed checks and resolve them. PLEASE CASH
YOUR CHECK OR DONATE IT BACK TO THE FAIR. If you choose
to donate your premiums back to the Fair, please sign the check and
return it to the Fair Office with a note of explanation. Thank You!)
3. Exhibitor's family passes are $8.00 only if purchased when entries
are made; if purchased later they will be $20.00. Each household
is only allowed 1 pass at the $8.00 rate. Anything over 1 pass will
be charged at $20.00 per pass.
4. Youth and Open show stall fees must be included with each
individual exhibitor's entry form. They are NOT to be collected by
clubs or chapters.
5. A Grandstand Entertainment Package is available, good for
admittance every night. Available at the fair office, the adult ticket
is $40.00, the child's (age 6-12) is $18.00, with no limit on the
number purchased.
YOUTH SHOW GENERAL RULES
Any exhibitor in the Youth Show has permission to enter in open classes by
making his/her entry and abiding by the open class rules. (Open Exhibitors
in animal classes must be 6 yrs. of age by January 1st of the fair/exposition
year.) Livestock entered in the open class must be registered animals.
All exhibits except livestock, must be labeled with the exhibitor's number,
name, and address. Premiums shall be awarded to exhibits on a group
system of "A", "B", "C", unless otherwise specified. Livestock exhibitors
must have their exhibitor number when in the show ring. Ribbons shall be
given for each placing in all classes.
If in the opinion of the judge, an exhibit does not merit a blue ribbon or an
"A" group rating, the judge has the privilege of starting with the ribbon or
rating he or she decides is appropriate.
DRESS CODE FOR ANIMAL EXHIBITORS
The dress code is intended to maintain an atmosphere of professionalism in
the show/sale ring. Any clothing which draws undue attention to oneself, or
clothing that may distract other livestock exhibitors, spectators, or the public
is unacceptable. The final determination of whether an exhibitor's clothing
is appropriate rests with the Superintendent(s) and/or Fair Board members.
The following guidelines were approved by the Shiawassee County Fair
Board of Directors. The cooperation of all animal exhibitors is necessary
and expected in the show/sale ring.
1. Halter tops, crop tops, low cut blouses or sweaters, and shorts,
are not acceptable.
2. All clothing should be adequate to cover undergarments.
3. Clothingdisplayingor representing inappropriate language, tobacco
products, alcohol, drugs, sexual innuendoes and illegal or immoral
behavior is prohibited.
4. Jewelry that makes a noise or interferes with the handling of
livestock should be avoided.
5. Long pants will be required in show ring/sale ring. Baggie style pants
are not acceptable. Shirts and blouses should be tucked in.
6. Shoes should be of solid make. Sandals, high heels, crocs, flip-
flops and similar footwear are prohibited. Work boots or cowboy
boots are encouraged in the show ring/sale ring.
7. Collared shirts, 4-H club shirts or FFA shirts are strongly
recommended.
Those unwilling to comply with these guidelines will not be admitted to
the show ring and/or sale ring. (Appropriate dress codes adopted by
specific departments prior to 2005 will take precedence over the above
dress code.)

YOUTH AND OPEN ANIMALS - GENERAL RULES
POSSESSION
is defined as: The animal has been identified as the
exhibitor's project for the exhibition year and it is housed where it will be
maintained until the Fair. The exhibitor must have proof of ownership if it
is a market animal. Any exceptions must be approved (prior to the date
that possession is required) and the exhibitor is responsible to obtain
a statement of exception, which must be signed by a member of the
Executive committee and/or the Superintendent of the department in
which the animal is to be shown.
BRED AND OWNED
is defined as an animal owned by the exhibitor
exclusively and born of a dam owned by the exhibitor or the exhibitor's
immediate family. Exhibitors entering Bred and Owned classes must
submit the Bred and Owned Verification, page 14,
and
must enter the
class on the green entry form by the entry deadline. All Bred and Owned
Market animals must show in their Market Class in addition to their Bred
and Owned Class.
IMMEDIATE FAMILY
is defined as mother, father, stepmother,
stepfather, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-
sister, adopted brother or adopted sister and grandparents. No other
relationship will be accepted.
GROUNDS FEES
for animals are as follows:
Beef, Dairy, Horses (Open & Youth), Swine - $4.00 per animal
Goats, Sheep - $2.00 per animal, Dogs - $1.00 per dog
Poultry and Rabbits - $.50 per animal
Pullorum Testing fees are as follows:
Poultry $3.00 (per bird) for pullorum testing
Testing on exhibit birds only.
1. All exhibits in the Animal Departments must be in the possession of
the exhibitor byMay 1st unless otherwise stated inDepartment Rules.
2. Cloverbuds handling an animal shall have a parent or guardian
in attendance at all times.
3. Animals are required to unload in designated areas at specified
times only.
4.
The Grounds fees shall be used to provide bedding, necessary
supplies and clean the barns and grounds at the close of the fair.
5. Market Animal Tagging - All Market Beef animals must be enrolled
and tagged in January. All Market Goats must be enrolled and
tagged in May. See each species for specific rules.
6. Market class exhibitors may enter a maximum of 3 market entries
and sell 3 entries at auction. (Example: 1 pen of hogs, 1 pen of
market rabbits and 1 steer.)
7. Ownership is not required for an exhibitor to showany animal except
in market animal classes and specific classes such as homebred.
Market animals must be owned by their youth exhibitors.
8. All Bred and Owned Market animals must show in their Market
Class in addition to their Bred and Owned Class.
9. Exhibits showing in "youth"must personally fit and showhis/her own
animal or shall be penalized the amount of their premiums. Special
arrangements may be made with the barn superintendent.
10. Youth exhibitors who show an animal in a youth breeding and/or
market class will be eligible to enter showmanship for that species.
They must use the animal they entered in the breeding or market
class. Animal exhibitors cannot show in Showmanship only.
11. All grain, straw and hay must be provided by exhibitors, also water
pails, feed buckets, and all other equipment.
12. No animal exhibit shall be allowed on the fair grounds unless
it can be handled or led with one halter by the exhibitor. The
superintendent of the department will make that decision.
13. Weigh-in weights shall be used for all SALE and MARKET CLASS
ANIMALS.
14. A set of barn rules will be posted. All exhibitors will be expected
to abide by these Barn Rules. If stalls/pens are not kept clean
the exhibit/exhibitor may be sent home and shall be penalized
the amount of their premiums. All feeding must be done and
the barns clean by 8:30 am. The evening feeding and cleaning
must be done between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. WATERING
OF ANIMALS MUST BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY BY PAIL; no
exceptions. Animals are not to be exercised after 6:00 p.m.,
unless otherwise authorized by the barn superintendent.
